Trailers, no matter what kind you buy, are extremely useful for many different purposes. If you haul cargo on a regular basis, having a spacious trailer to keep that cargo safe on the road can save you time and money. It’s important to think about what you need from a trailer before you buy one, and this guide will help you do just that.

Enclosed or Open?

Trailers are typically either enclosed or open. Enclosed trailers (often called cargo trailers) have walls and a roof made of metal, with a locking door at the side or rear of the trailer. These trailers are great if your cargo is very valuable or delicate and it needs to be sheltered from theft, vandalism, and weather damage.

Open or flatbed trailers are roomier and can handle oddly-shaped cargo better. They’re also more affordable and easier to maintain, in addition to being lighter in weight and easier to tow. However, they do not have the ability to keep your cargo protected.

Space Needs & Towing Capacity

Finally, you’ll want to consider how much space you’re going to need in your trailer for the type of cargo you frequently haul. You want a trailer that can handle heavy loads, but you don’t want to overburden your towing vehicle with too large of a trailer. You’ll have to carefully balance your space needs with your vehicle’s towing capacity.
